SALARY NEGOTIATION
During the hiring process and salary negotiation, I was the liaison, the “middle person” between the Hiring Managers and the job candidates. The Staffing Team member who is assigned to the job opening is almost always the first person to discuss salary with candidates before the Hiring Manager. Providing candidates salary information, history, expectations and requirements to the Hiring Manager is a big part of our daily routine.
The majority of Hiring Managers do not want to get into a salary discussion with the candidates. So, they ask the Staffing person assigned to the job opening to deal with the candidate's salary requirements and/or salary issues. I would liken it to a Doctor and a patient. The Doctor typically does not discuss fees and payment with you during or after an exam. We can agree it's not typical. The billing assistants usually handle fees and payment arrangements. Sometimes discussing money is not a comfort zone.
Most books authored by negotiation experts are very helpful and useful. But what they don't and can't teach you is how many job candidate's wind up either receiving less than they could have OR why they never hear back from Employers even if they followed suggestions and techniques to the letter.
Unless the authors have experience working on my side of the desk, specifically in a corporate staffing/hiring capacity, they do not know one very important, critical piece of information regarding salary negotiation.
LEARN HOW TO …
*NEGOTIATE A HIGHER SALARY
*REDUCE YOUR CHANCES OF BEING DISQUALIFIED
Some Hiring Managers will discuss salary with the candidates but most do not. If so, it's usually towards the end of the hiring and interviewing process and after the Staffing person has already discussed salary expectations and the total compensation package with the candidates.
Therefore, I'm keenly aware of why so many new hires are offered a salary lower than they could have received while few are able to negotiate the highest possible salary. I'm also keenly aware of how and when some candidates will be disqualified based on salary.
The Staffing person assigned to the position is usually the liaison for Hiring Management. We discuss compensation and negotiate salary every single day.
