HIRING A RESUME WRITER

Resume writing books, guides and workshops instructing job seekers on how to write a great resume are excellent sources of information. I have researched and reviewed many popular books and guides on resume writing. I recommend purchasing or borrowing a resume writing book or guide to assist you in constructing a basic resume or rough draft.

I have read thousands of resumes, so I'm keenly aware of what catches the reader's attention. I based my professional resume writer recommendations on my years of experience reading resumes and obtaining feedback from Hiring Managers.

Resume writing books and workshops should only be used as a guide in assisting you in creating a rough draft of your resume, NOT the final draft. Crafting and designing the final draft for a great resume is very time intensive.

Creating a rough draft will provide you with the opportunity to become more familiar and in tune with your skills and abilities. It will help you to realize how much you have actually accomplished. It will also save time for the professional resume writer I highly recommend you hire.

Once you start listing your achievements one by one, you'll be surprised what you've actually accomplished. It's also very helpful during the interview when answering job interview questions regarding information contained in your resume.

Professional resume writers typically charge more if they have to start from scratch. So, creating a basic and first draft of your resume is also very helpful for the professional resume writer. Again, I highly recommend you hire one.

In addition to reviewing resume writing books or guides, job seekers might want to consider attending a local resume writing workshop. Some people are more comfortable and successful working in a group setting while learning to construct their resume. Resume writing workshops are also a great way to network.

If you are really busy and pressed for time and unable to attend, then simply provide a professional resume writer with a rough draft. Avoid stressing and putting lots of unnecessary time into the basic, rough draft of your resume. That's what you are paying the professional resume writer to do.

All you really need to do is create a basic, simple, accurate and up to date resume for the resume writer.
Include the following; 1 page for entry-level, 2 pages (max) senior level.

*Your NAME in ALL CAPS, LARGER FONT and BOLDED
*Contact information (Address, phone #, alternate phone # and email address)
*Objective (type of job you're looking for; Be very clear, concise and avoid being vague)
*Brief Background Summary/Skills and/or Career Highlights
*Accomplishments (be prepared in the interview to be "quizzed" on them)
*Job History/Responsibilities (starting with most recent)
*Education (only list at top of resume if you recently graduated or within past few years)
*Professional Organizations/Affiliations (if you're not an active member, become one)

Do not Include:

*SS#
*P.O. Boxes
*Toll Free #'s
*A Photo
*Salary History/Information
*Professional References
*Church Groups or Religious Affiliations (except in rare circumstances where it makes sense and is politically correct. For example, the referring Hiring Management all belong to your church group.)
*Leave off High School
*Hobbies (unless they are directly related or connected to the job description/requirements of the jobs you are applying for)

AVOID using adjectives such as;
People person, Sociable, Likeable, Popular, Honest, Trustworthy and/or Caring

You should be able to put this all together in less than one hour. If you are starting from scratch you may need a full hour. If you are spending more than one hour on your basic first draft, you are wasting valuable time.

Do not spend a lot of time on your resume draft.

Some resume writers might request recent performance reviews to use as a guide. I believe it's a real good idea but of course, sharing your performance review is your decision.

Follow their helpful hints and utilize their professional resume writing advice and suggestions. Simply follow the "Do's & Don'ts". Include words from their list of power/action verbs. Then leave all the rest up to the professional resume writer.

Do not fuss and get carried away with minor details. Avoid turning your resume draft into a major project or weekend event. It's unnecessary and not a good use of your time. Construct a basic resume as best you can. Select someone you trust to review your resume for accuracy before sending it to off to the professional writer. Relax, you're not going to be graded.

I DO NOT recommend candidates author their final resume version … ever .

One reason is that candidates need to be utilizing their time for job searching, networking and honing their interview and salary negotiation skills. I think that is already a full plate for most people. Secondly, if you "DYI",  (do it yourself), you'll probably waste time constantly tweaking it. You'll wonder if your resume could be better.

Why? Well, unless you are a professional writer, it could be better

Don't waste your time, stress out and wrack your brain doing something you really aren't good at. If you hire a professional resume writer, your resume will serve you well for a long, long time. I encourage you to make the initial investment. It's a great investment and one I highly recommend. You'll get a ROI.

In the future, most professional resume writers will only charge a minimal fee for a resume update. Updating and adding new skills you have recently acquired is not nearly as time consuming as crafting and tweaking the final draft of your original resume. For a seasoned resume writer, compared to the first and final draft, updating is quick and easy.

So, a plain, simple, basic original DRAFT resume is all you need to provide.

IF YOU WANT A PROFESSIONAL RESUME THAT STANDS OUT, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL.

It's as simple as that.
